Clara Whitmore, a solicitor’s assistant at the London firm of Dallow & Fiske, has been sent to Ravenscroft Hall, an estate in a remote village, to settle a will. She thinks it is a quick assignment, but has no idea how wrong she is. On her arrival, she notices how the villagers regard the estate with fear and superstition. Some warn her of its nature, and some offer her herbs for protection. Clara believes their concerns cannot affect her work, which relies on order and facts, and she is determined to do her job. However, after entering the estate and meeting its occupants, she begins witnessing a series of strange happenings. Unwilling to give in to dark forces and hell-bent on breaking a cycle everyone seems to have accepted, Clara finds herself up against great evil, bound to the estate by an ancient oath. Riding introduces readers to the characters’ unsettling, haunted world through deliberate, reflective narration. The vivid depictions took me back to early twentieth-century England. I could see everything, from the imposing iron gate of Ravenscroft Hall to its dark stone exterior with unlit windows, its interior, including its furniture, finishes, and inhabitants, and the mist that enshrouded the village and the estate. I could also feel the strange energy in the house. It was like I was watching a Hollywood historical horror movie. Riding has a knack for making scenes dreadful. Some pages left me gripping the edge of my seat as I watched the characters fall at the mercy of the house’s evil. Clara is a stubborn character driven by logic and her profession, and she believes they can solve anything, including the estate’s dilemma. However, she is about to learn a tough lesson about the supernatural world. If you are looking for a historical mystery and horror novel laced with psychological thrills, a hint of drama, and suspense, The Oath of Ravenscroft Hall by Samuel Riding is an enthralling pick.
