There are leaders in every organization; some excel, and some fail. Leadership is earned, but it also needs to be learned. In Denola M. Burton’s Enhancing Your Leadership DNA, she breaks down the core components of leadership into bite-sized pieces. Section one on coaching covers development and growth, difficult conversations, and building a positive coaching culture. Section two goes on to detail how to put your skills into practice; she calls it the “coaching playbook.” She covers accountability, effective communication, the power of recognition, and fostering collaboration. Denola wraps up the section discussing emotional intelligence (EQ). Section three discusses your coaching future, in particular, the legacy you plan to leave. The appendix offers links to relevant sources to assist leaders and coaches.

Denola M. Burton has more than 20 years in HR coaching and developing people, giving her immediate credibility to write this book. She shares her wisdom in the form of personal quotes, which she then goes on to clarify in more detail in each chapter. The writing is clear, concise, and engaging. There is no industry jargon or anything complicated; anyone could read this book and get the knowledge they require. I wish I’d had this book when I was a corporate trainer. I spotted quite a few of my own weaknesses as a leader inside these chapters. Leading and coaching aren’t the same, and I feel more educated about the differences now. I encourage every reader to complete the “Identify Your Coaching Style” assessment to find out what your primary and secondary styles are. You might be surprised. Enhancing Your Leadership DNA is for anyone who is currently in a leadership or coaching role, or anyone considering accepting a promotion to one of these. I highly recommend this book to everyone in these positions, regardless of their tenure.
