In V.K. Walker’s Enlightened Ice, something sinister is growing outside Taha’an. Shaylan finds herself in Hamilton, feeling a strange energy drawing her to an auto garage. A strange voice in her mind tells her to enter the shop where she sees Aiden. The mechanic was not overly friendly, but both of them are overwhelmed with intense desire and find themselves in a love-hate relationship. Aiden knows the more time he spends with Shaylan, the more likely his father has a hand in the blackouts and burning fire she feels inside. Shaylan says Fakar can’t control her because she is a Mindsweeper. When Fakar makes a surprise visit to the shop, Aiden uses his deadly ice barrier to hide Shaylan. However, how long will Aiden be able to protect Shaylan?
V.K. Walker built the suspense to near torture levels in this fantasy story. Shaylan and Aiden were both swept away by impulse. I believed Shaylan’s account of being lost, but the strange voice begins when she feels a high energy level. The story is vivid in describing its surroundings. I found the emotional feelings relatable and the dialogue realistic. The unique perceptions of several characters, including supporting characters, gave a deeper understanding of their actions. The plot of the story is unpredictable, and I carefully read each page until I reached an open-ended conclusion. I found Kayala and Torq to be intense characters that I want to learn more about in the sequel. I recommend Enlightened Ice for fantasy romance readers who like well-developed characters discovering their true worth.
