Every Day with Jesus Devotional: God Loves and Cares for You by Shirley A Howard is a Christian daily journal with the intent of structuring a sliver of each day as a time devoted wholly, completely and entirely to God, so one might then come to understand how much greater life in the light is when we allow ourselves to bask in it. Howard breaks the book down by actual date, beginning on January 1st and concluding on December 31, although starting on whatever day a reader happens to pick it up makes no difference. Like many people's journey with Christ, it almost always starts in the middle. The days have five distinct and interconnected parts: a theme, some insightfully punchy words, a scriptural reference and the wisdom on its meaning, and a prayer for that day. Journaling lines follow and as the weeks and months progress, additional poetry and scripture thread through Howard's devotional.
I've always really liked daily devotionals but am forced to admit that, most of the time, after a couple of weeks I stop doing them. I don't know why that is. Life gets in the way. Kids need to get to soccer practice, the dog has gotten into the neighbor's yard again, and all of the usual excuses that pop up and devour our day. When I decided to give Every Day with Jesus Devotional: God Loves and Cares for You by Shirley A Howard, I switched the usual devotional drill. I kept it on my nightstand and instead of wrestling for time to give to God in the mornings, I curled up in bed with the book in the evenings. What a change! I went to bed with God being the very last thought in my mind and woke up seeing His word, literally, on my nightstand first thing every morning. I also found that Howard's simple and succinct construction of the daily devotion makes it easy and something I now really look forward to. I have no doubt others will feel the same. Very highly recommended.
