Breanna – Bree – was a party animal until she met and married Jake Stone, a Canadian policeman. She is unaware of the stresses and strains he faces in his daily work, and when a gang discovers where they live, it becomes even more dangerous. Bree is about to have her second child. While he is on paternity leave, Jake’s partner, Arlen Mathews, also his best friend, is killed while chasing the same villains. The family moves to a safer area, but with Jake suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and Bree battling to cope with postpartum depression, they face more danger. While Jake battles with guilt, finding it harder and harder to cope, Bree is isolated with two demanding children she has to protect at all costs. The story becomes more intense and threatening as they drift further apart, the main drug dealer discovers their new address, and weird and paranormal happenings start in the house.

Every Fall by Angela Douglas is a chilling thriller, perfect for fans of Karin Slaughter and Lisa Gardner. When the opening pages of a book are a suicide note, you cannot put it down. I loved the way chapter headings told us the tale from both Jake's and Bree’s points of view. The plot moves swiftly along, and the hints of a paranormal element make it extra exciting. Many women will relate to the challenges of caring for two children, after a fulfilling career, and the lack of communication with a husband whose job entails not discussing the seedy side of life he encounters every day. Douglas takes us into the dark side of humanity, with drug dealers, murderers, and gang warfare. Keeping the action tight without stalling, the scenes she paints come alive. The characters leap off the pages, and you cannot help caring about them. Even the cover is enticing. I really enjoyed it and shall be looking out for the next book.
