The ties that bind a family aren’t always the same. In Every Family is a Tree by Andrea Z. Ali-Panzarella, readers are shown how those ties can grow in many different ways. It’s a children’s book emphasizing that families are created and forever connected. Through clear, simple storytelling and colorful illustrations, the book explains how not all families grow in the same way, but that’s what makes them special. Some grow together from birth or adoption, while others form in different ways, but all types are built with love and care. A tree metaphor is used throughout. It’s used to explain how trees grow and expand just like families do. At its heart, the story is about connection, belonging, and the love that ties families together.
As a person who loves genealogy and family history, I absolutely enjoyed reading Every Family is a Tree by Andrea Z. Ali-Panzarella. As an educator, I appreciate the simple way the concept of different kinds of families was explained by using a comparison with a tree. All children have some family, and reading this book in a classroom setting will open the door for them to talk about their own families while learning to appreciate the types of families their classmates come from. I love how young readers are encouraged to see that no matter what their family looks like, they belong and their story matters. This book could easily be extended with an activity like drawing a tree and writing their family members’ names on it. The illustrations by Liliia Martyniuk are vibrant and will keep children engaged throughout. Books like this create space for children to feel seen while also teaching empathy for the experiences of others.
