The Liminal Room is the first book in the Phoenix Awakening series by Cass Henderson. The story follows two teenagers whose lives collide when the lines between dream and reality blur. Ceph was eighteen years old and was bound to serve the crown. All his life was spent training his elemental magic while remaining invisible to the world. He should not exist, but things change when he develops a new, rare power that draws the attention of the greedy king. Nix, on the other hand, was a seventeen-year-old who lived in a different reality and had different challenges. She had vivid dreams that were slowly merging with reality. Things took a dangerous turn when Nix was captured by a dangerous research center so that they could study her abilities. Nothing could have prepared Nix and Ceph as their worlds collided and changed everything forever. As secrets across both timelines were revealed, it was up to Ceph and Nix to find an answer to their troubles before it was too late. But can they?
Author Cass Henderson created this incredible story with strong characters and a fantastic plot. This young adult fantasy novel had me hooked from the very beginning. I love every story that has something to do with magic that actually manifests, and The Liminal Room is in my top 10. The character development of the protagonists and the supporting cast is incredible. I enjoyed Ceph’s development the most. He was already confident in his abilities, but the circumstances surrounding them made him almost lethal. Nix was a little out of depth for most of the story. Her arc was the most satisfying. She slowly got to embrace her magic, experience its potential, and try to make sense of it all before all hell went loose. The pace of the story follows the development arc of the characters, and that is what made the story most enjoyable to me. I loved the cliffhanger ending, the descriptive narrative, and the fast pace of The Liminal Room. I can't wait to see what the next novel in the series will hold for Nix, Ceph, Carina, Henry, and co.
