Faera: The Ritual by Ignacio Medina follows the titular Faera, a skilled masked warrior, as she infiltrates King Malgor’s prison system to rescue captives from a deadly labyrinth. Borgan, a thin, bearded man, a young woman with a shaved head, a sunken-eyed man, and a blacksmith are trapped and hunted by a monstrous creature beneath the citadel. After the creature makes a kill, Faera rescues the blacksmith’s daughter, discovers the king’s secret orders about the labyrinth, and works to free prisoners from the castle’s dungeons. She leads them into the labyrinth, using stealth, strategy, and combat skills to move through its twisting, corpse-strewn corridors. Still, even with Faera directing every move to protect the prisoners and escape the underworld of the citadel, it's impossible to predict the outcome when nothing goes according to plan.

“Faera's voice dropped to an icy murmur. 'I'm going to kill the beast.'” Ignacio Medina’s Faera: The Ritual is a really well-written and fantastically relentless adventure. Medina steers Faera’s journey along desolate roads and shadowed corridors in darkness that is reflective of the workings of her mind and outlook, as much as the depiction of the labyrinth and its monstrous inhabitant is indicative of the shadowy world. Faera is wildly intelligent and fierce, and it's refreshing to see a female protagonist who is also a spectacular combatant, with agency and clout in her own right. This story moves at a constant whip-tight pace, and there are multiple twists that, going in, I definitely did not see coming. The body count is high, but so is the suspense, with an ending that promises more to come from Medina's already massive Shadow of Vengeance series. Very highly recommended.
