Fawn is not human; she is a Shapeling and has earned her rank of Master Shapeling. The thirteen co-princes send Fawn on a mission to help Zoe, a seven year old motherless girl. Zoe hears voices that frighten her. She screams and misbehaves. Her father Wade has found it impossible to keep a nanny. When he saw Fawn for the first time he had little hope that she would last more than a day. Much to his surprise Fawn not only lasted more than a day but she quickly took to life on the ranch and earned a special place in both Zoe and Wade’s heart. However, life is never that easy and danger lay ahead. Can Wade come to terms with Zoe’s true identity? Can Fawn help Zoe learn to listen to the voices? Will evil win?

"Fawn" is a delightful read. I enjoy Shapeshifter tales; unfortunately too often they are too graphic. Not so with Verna Clay’s latest book. She skillfully developed a suspenseful, romantic, sensual plot without crossing the boundary between tastefulness and tastelessness. In Book Two of Shapeling Trilogy we meet Fawn. I was glad the author gave us a hint of background information to set the stage for Fawn. The author has a distinct talent for creating a strong plot. She set the stage for danger and romance and allowed the reader to watch as it all unfolded before her/him. I enjoyed the way the romance was allowed to slowly build to a crescendo. All in all this is a good, fast read, the kind I enjoy on a cold day when I curl up in front of a fire. I have not read the first book in this series. I will be watching for more books by this author.
