Fearfully and Wonderfully Made by Tiffiney Rogers-McDaniel helps children believe what the Bible says about their beauty, even when they feel different. Five-year-old MacKenzie loves to dress up and look her best in sparkly outfits that match her vibrant personality. One day, MacKenzie and her mother discover a light spot on her face and make a doctor’s appointment to figure out what is happening. As MacKenzie awaits the appointment, the spot grows and her daycare friends ask about it all the time. Suddenly, MacKenzie isn’t so bubbly or happy about her appearance anymore. Luckily, the adults who love MacKenzie have ideas to help her see herself the way God does. MacKenzie’s mother helps her see others who have skin like hers such as a famous model, and a coworker takes the time to tell MacKenzie how special she is. Mrs. Christian, the daycare worker, teaches the children a passage of scripture, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made,” and helps them see that although they all look different, they are made uniquely by God. MacKenzie is once again able to look in a mirror and see herself as vibrant and beautiful and made in God’s image.

This picture book will help children begin to process what it means to live as followers of Jesus. In Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, Tiffiney Rogers-McDaniel beautifully illustrates a diverse world. MacKenzie’s family and Mrs. Christian have darker skin, and children of different skin tones, hair colors, and genders fill the daycare. I do not believe I have seen any characters with vitiligo in a children’s story before, and I deeply appreciated how this story balances the challenges of looking different with seeing the beauty of people as they are. Scripture is presented in a way that children will be able to understand. The daycare talks about how Psalm 139:14 means that even when they look different, they have still been made with purpose and love. A great picture book for the beloved young Christian in your life.
