Cheryl Carpinello’s Feathers of the Phoenix follows Rosa and her cousin Jerome after the ancient Atlantean Mneseus arrives with news that the second Phoenix Feather is ready to be found. The five Feathers must one day reunite with the Atlantean Horse so Atlantis can rise, but the Four Horsemen are searching for them too. A Time Wrap takes the cousins from Colorado to an ancient Iceland guarded by the Norse Star, where the white cat Njal may be the Ancient One they need. Their path crosses glaciers before dropping beneath the volcanic island to a hidden past where trolls still walk, and shapeshifters use old magic. With one Horseman already ahead of them on a Nykur, Rosa and Jerome have to reach the Feather before it is claimed for a very different future.

Cheryl Carpinello’s Feathers of the Phoenix is a brilliant young adult adventure fantasy, and Carpinello proves just how much a real setting can empower a magical quest. Iceland is fantastic. The author takes readers to the boiling pools at Namafjall, then under the Northern Lights as the Norse Star opens paths through time. The best part is Rosa. I love that her ability to hear the dead never turns her into someone fearless; she still gets scared, but the Atlanteans’ calls keep her moving. Jerome is wonderful too, especially when his geology knowledge helps him recognize a glacier from polished stones. The race to Skogafoss is excellent, with Jerome entering the icy pool while Rosa waits with the Feather pouch. Well written and packed with mythology, young readers who enjoy magical quests will love this book.
