Field Notes From a Fungi Forager by Ashley Rodriguez is an amazing guide to discovering a variety of mushrooms and specifically focuses on those found in the Pacific Northwest. This stems from a love of exploring mushrooms in beautiful and scenic locations both forest and urban. The guide contains advice that teaches readers what mushrooms to look for when foraging. These include well-known ones such as the Chanterelle to the lesser known ones such as the candy cap. Fascinating facts can be found in each profile with unique details. Also included for those foraging for the kitchen are a few sidebars that tell readers how to use mushrooms in the kitchen.
While this book is not considered a field guide, it can be used to identify mushrooms and is more of a love letter to the region. Before eating or gathering mushrooms, one must know how to identify them for safety purposes. This book shows how essential mushrooms are to the environment and creates an appreciation for them as their existence helps keep our forests cleaner. This book does an excellent job of capturing the wonder and whimsy of fungi. Gorgeous illustrations by Libby England are a visual introduction to fifty species and pair well with the profiles. The writing is humorous through the use of clever phrasing and strange facts. Ashley Rodriguez does a solid job of teaching readers about the different types of mushrooms, their basic backgrounds, and even how to use them in the kitchen. Field Notes From a Fungi Forager is an amazing collection of illustrations and profiles that serve as a great introduction to mushrooms in the Pacific Northwest for those who are interested in foraging and mushroom collecting.
