Tabitha Unleashed is the first book in the Unbroken Series by Robert W Adams. The story follows sixteen-year-old Tabitha Griffin as she tries to survive a world that doesn’t understand her. She is a suicide-attempt survivor hiding a real magical ability behind the appearance of stage illusions on a nationally televised talent competition. Tabitha is competing to win the million-dollar prize that could pay for an experimental treatment to save her twin sister Kayla. Her sister is battling cancer with only a slim chance of survival. As Tabitha's real powers start slipping out on live television and turning her into a viral sensation, she also finds unexpected friendship and first love along the way. But when a political movement latches onto her as a symbol of queer resistance, the walls she's built to protect her biggest secrets start to break down. Before she knows it, she has to decide what she's willing to reveal, and to whom, if she wants any chance of saving her sister and herself.
Robert W Adams’ writing style reminded me of Marissa Meyer. It has the same quality of creating pictures with words and making the reader forget where they are. I felt like I was right next to Tabitha and living every struggle and divisive moment with her. Tabitha is a strong character. She is funny even in the darkest moments, which made it instantly easy for me to connect with her. Her relationship with Kayla is beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. The way the two sisters banter even in between chemotherapy and hospital stays made me laugh one minute and cry the next. Adams skillfully touches upon issues such as depression and suicide. He gives Tabitha's pain real weight without ever making the story feel hopeless. This novel deals openly with suicide, self-harm, depression, and bullying, and the author includes a content note and crisis resources at the front of the book. The competition adds great tension to the story too. Watching Tabitha’s real magic appear in front of millions of people kept me on edge the whole way through. Tabitha Unleashed is a powerful story, and I cannot wait to see what happens next.
