Stefan Vucak’s Final Limit follows President Samuel Walters as a confrontation with China in the South China Sea collides with an event beyond earthly politics. An enormous craft appears near the Moon, slows under its own power, then settles in the Procellarum-Imbrium Basin, where strange machines begin surveying the surface. NASA’s observations suggest the visitor has arrived for a practical reason that places Earth’s future within reach of decisions being made in Washington. As Walters weighs what humanity can tolerate on the Moon, former Army Ranger Emily Sands is pulled into an FBI investigation linked to a threat against him. Her past inside TriCon’s clandestine Extra Services network gives federal agents access to a world built around anonymous contracts. With nations testing one another on Earth, the craft above them changes the calculations in every capital below.
Stefan Vucak’s Final Limit is outstanding geopolitical science fiction, with the muscular pace I want from a thriller this ambitious. Vucak is first-rate with military procedure, giving every technical detail a role inside the scene. The E-2D Hawkeye sequence proves it when four DF-11 missile tracks appear near a carrier group, leaving the crew only seconds to interpret what they are seeing. Thomas Meecham happens to be my favorite character, whose impatience for results gives his exchanges with Emily Sands a sharp, funny edge that fits both of them. Vucak also understands how military danger rises from judgment under pressure, and he uses it throughout. Captain Vance Twayne proves that aboard USS Gridley as a Chinese cutter closes near Scarborough Shoal. Readers who want intelligent geopolitical science fiction should put Final Limit high on their reading list. Very highly recommended.
