First There Was Fear by Regina Puckett is a startling and intense short story about a woman's fight for her life. Ronni is at work when a large boom sounds and shakes the whole building in which her eighteenth-floor office resides. It happens again and all the lights go out. Frightened, Ronni and her co-workers run to the windows to see if they can find out what is causing their building to shake. They are stunned to see a large black object hovering over the city as far as the eye can see. While they are trying to comprehend what they are viewing, the building shudders again from another loud boom. The window they are standing at explodes, knocking them all to the floor. Ronni decides to take her hysterical friend, Susan, down the stairs to the ground floor. Forced along with the flow of frightened people, they exit the building onto the chaotic street. Hank, the obnoxious jerk Ronni works with, helps Ronni into a relatively quiet place in the alley behind a dumpster. Now they're out of the building, but where can they go that is safe? Where can they hide from their attackers? Will they be able to survive?

First There Was Fear by Regina Puckett is a short story that reaches into the primal regions of your fear center. Facing an unknown attacker that is alien to everything you know and understand is a terrifying experience. Although Ronni is filled with terror, she fights to escape and when that fails, she fights to survive. She faces the pain and fear with courage and, to her surprise, faces it with the help of the one she least expected to be by her side. This is an inspiring story. The author has written an insightful tale and done it very well. An excellent read that I highly recommend.
