Evelyn Puerto’s Flicker of the Flame offers readers a glimpse into Tereka Sabidur’s life. Tereka is a young girl mistreated and hated by her mother. She does her best in everything she does, thinking that if she can please her mother once, she may be kinder to her. However, on her youngest brother Aito’s third birthday, Tereka and her father are driven out of their home. Tereka feels a stab of rejection but also the balm of relief; she won’t have to endure her mother’s abuse anymore. Still, she is faced with new challenges as she learns about who she is and finds herself in a fight for her life.
Flicker of the Flame is an incredible story centered around Tereka Sabidur’s life. The first chapter already had my attention from the very first sentence! The more I read through the book, the more invested I was with its intricate plot and outstanding, distinctive characters. Tereka is a sweet child who loves her siblings and is eager to please her mother despite the abuse she has gone through at her mother's hand. Her character was introduced unforgettably, and reading about the trials she goes through and witnessing her growth throughout the story was fascinating and heart-wrenching. Tereka grows up into an admirable person, but it hurts me to think of everything she has to go through to get where she is.
The twists and turns of the story and the struggles of our main character bring a sharp flavor into the book, and I can’t get enough of it! I am constantly in awe at the thought and heart put into this wonderful piece of writing. The narration is evenly paced, and Puerto has seamlessly combined fantasy and action elements, bringing forth this magnificent tale! Flicker of the Flame is a phenomenal fantasy novel, and I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in this setting. This book has left its mark on me, and I’m looking forward to more spectacular work by Evelyn Puerto!
