Floating Underwater is a novel by Tracy Shawn that blends psychological drama and mystical fiction. The protagonist, Paloma, is struggling to cope with her third miscarriage and her life that has been scarred by loss. Her sister was kidnapped before Paloma was old enough to know her, and her mother died after years of struggling with schizophrenia. Paloma worries that she will develop the same mental illness, and she is always reminded of her painful memories by the presence of a mentally ill young woman in her neighborhood. That woman is Serena, and most people are uncomfortable whenever they encounter her, but Paloma experienced Serena’s compassion and kindness firsthand. Even though Serena had begun stalking her, Paloma finds Serena’s presence comforting.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Although the story grapples with loss in many forms, this drama never became too heavy, thanks to Tracy Shawn’s splendid prose. Paloma’s story is one of love, understanding, and acceptance, and her pain is mingled with joy. I found that very inspiring. Floating Underwater is a rich tapestry of emotion and imagery, with vivid descriptions that drew me deep into Paloma’s world. The balance between spiritual experiences and concerns about mental illness created a truly compelling mystery. Along with Paloma, I wondered whether she was losing her mind. I’m certain that readers who enjoy drama and sublime narration will not want to miss out on this book. I’ve never read anything like it, and it honestly blew me away.
