Flood in the Desert by Liz Fahey is a tale of myth and nature in the canyons somewhere in the center of the Mighty Five National Parks. Izzy, an enormous striped creature known as a jungle NOLO, braves the dry and dangerous desert to find her friend Adam, a desert NOLO, who’s gone missing. What starts as a search mission turns into a race against a deadly flash flood, where two human kids, Evan and Ella, become involved in the adventure. A desperate cry for help echoes through the canyons, prompting Izzy to act fast. But it will require her size, smarts, and spirit to save both her friend and the stranded children.

Liz Fahey’s plot unfolds like a scene in a movie. The momentum is constant; there are moments of suspense, humor, and compassion. The pacing never drops, as the narrative alternates between Izzy’s determined search and the kids’ escalating peril in the five-finger divide. Each character has a wonderful personality; Izzy is curious, brave, and fiercely loyal, while Evan and Ella are resourceful siblings whose bond deepens in crisis. The narrative also gently introduces environmental education about flash floods and desert safety. Felipe Sato’s artwork is full of charm and scale, bringing the fantastical NOLO world to life. Fans of The Last Kids on Earth or The Wild Robot will be captivated by the mix of action, empathy, and nature-inspired fantasy. Flood in the Desert is perfect for middle-grade readers who love creature-led adventures with real-world grounding.
