Have you ever had to start your life over again? In Forever Kind of Love by Susan Elizabeth Bagby, Willow Mason heads back to her small Ohio hometown to do just that. Once there, she’s forced to take a job managing a local bookstore after her husband’s shady crimes destroy the life and ambitions she built in New York City. Willow is also helping to care for George Hayes, her best friend’s dad, who is struggling with dementia. She spends her days balancing work and family responsibilities while trying not to dwell on her failed marriage and slowly rediscovering her love of photography and art. At the same time, country music star Zachary Hayes returns home from Nashville after learning of his father George’s worsening condition. He hopes to support his sister and reconnect with the dad he’s grown distant from over the years. Zach also happens to be Willow’s longtime crush, and he begins to see her in a different light once he helps her renovate her place. As Willow and Zach spend more time together, will their growing friendship turn into something more, or will the emotional baggage they both carry get in the way?
I really enjoyed Forever Kind of Love by Susan Elizabeth Bagby. Willow was easy to connect with because she wasn’t perfect or instantly confident after everything she’d been through. I liked watching her slowly rebuild her life while trying to protect her heart. Zach surprised me a bit. I thought he was going to be one-dimensional, but I was wonderfully wrong. Beneath his fame and charm lay loneliness, guilt, and an uncertainty about where he truly belonged. The writing was smooth, and the small-town setting gave the story a warm and comforting feel. I especially liked the quieter scenes, like when Zach helped Willow with projects at her place, making their growing connection more meaningful. Readers looking for an emotional small-town romance or a character-driven love story will want to pick this one up. It’s the kind of book that pulls you in and leaves you thinking about the characters long after it’s over.
