Fragment: Some Truths Destroy Everything by Kenneth James Allen is a compelling psychological thriller with a unique premise that will fascinate readers. Detective Nick Valentine is a man haunted by a mystery he has been unable to unravel: who shot and killed his adoptive parents? Convinced his own brother was somehow involved in their deaths, he struggles with his inability to piece together his memories of that night. RASA is a high-tech company that has developed a technology for erasing memories, specifically trauma, from patients. Being the only corporation with this technology, RASA’s CEO has become very wealthy and extremely powerful. When Valentine investigates the death of a young woman from RASA who was threatening to expose the corporation for its corruption and weaponization of memories, he uncovers a political conspiracy and cover-up that will potentially destroy the company, but he also discovers the dangers of remembering the truth.
Fragment is a fast-paced, well-plotted story that will grab readers with its technology as well as its web of lies, deceit, and corruption. Author Kenneth James Allen’s concept of a process that can wipe out trauma from people’s minds sounds, on the surface, to be a great boon for victims of violence or disaster, but like all high-tech, it has the potential to be used for good or evil. The placing of all that power in one company and one person’s hands is perfectly illustrated in this story. I appreciated the depth and complexities of Detective Nick Valentine’s character. The moral ambiguity of his adoptive parents’ mistreatment of Nick and his brother, and the belief that they did indeed deserve to die, is something that both siblings had wrestled with over the years. Nick’s relationship with his brother was fascinating. Believing Sonny was the murderer of their adoptive parents, and despite his desire to see him behind bars, there was an underlying brotherly love that shone through on occasions. Martin, the former priest, added another layer of complexity to the tangled web of the pair’s childhood and adulthood, which gave depth and color to the plot. I found this story fresh, riveting, and just dark enough to keep me intrigued. I highly recommend this read.
