After a decade away from his hometown of Philadelphia, thirty-five-year-old Evan is back to bury his recently murdered grandfather. During the funeral, the family learns from the press that Evan’s uncle, Michael O’Brien, is running for mayor. Apparently, after the death of the incumbent Republican mayor, Tom Farraday, a week earlier, the local party boss, better known as VDM, had chosen Michael to replace him. Michael asks Evan to be his unpaid Communications Director for his campaign, an offer Evan accepts by quitting his job in New York City. However, it soon becomes clear that Michael, an authentic and empathetic man who believes people are inherently good, lacks the disposition for politics, and his “good-natured” campaign style might not win him the election. Evan decides to do the one thing his uncle wouldn’t do, but would win him the seat: play dirty. As the election date approaches, Evan is about to uncover dark secrets about his family and the party, which will make him question his campaign and life. Find out how it all goes down in Funeral of Lies by A. E. S. O’Neill.

Funeral of Lies by A. E. S. O’Neill is a perfect pick for lovers of drama novels packed with political intrigue, mystery, edge-of-the-seat suspense, and jaw-dropping plot twists. Right from the start, the author wastes no time in introducing me to the well-crafted, fascinating cast with intimate, deliberate prose and vivid imagery. The storyline unravels through a first-person perspective, allowing me to interact with the characters and the city through Evan’s lens. The introspective commentary, often accompanied by self-aware humor, and the dynamic conversations, loaded with sarcasm and cynicism, made the story entertaining. It felt like I was watching a Hollywood comedy-drama about an Irish dysfunctional family and a chaotic mayoral race. As I followed Evan juggling his uncle’s campaign while secretly undermining his opponent, I could see his emotional turmoil as he navigated his own and his family’s history. I relished every moment I spent in the pages of this gripping read, and I loved it.
