In Gar the Great and the Forbidden Top Shelf Shiny by M K Bingman, Gar is a sweet cat with a best friend named Harold. Gar wakes up hungry after another nap and tries to get Dad’s attention. After sharing his food and drink with Harold, Gar leaves his friend with Dad so he can get in his daily exercise. After running and jumping, Gar decides he wants to be up on top of Dad’s bookshelf, where he sees something shiny. He wonders why Dad would put anything out of his reach when he knows how much Gar loves to play with toys. Gar discusses a plan with Harold to get to the other bookshelf to see what Dad has been keeping up there. What has Dad been keeping out of Gar’s reach? Will this wise cat figure out how to get up there by himself to find out what the shiny treasure is?
Gar the Great and the Forbidden Top Shelf Shiny is one of the most entertaining picture books that I have seen in a long time. I absolutely loved seeing the world from the perspective of a cat who is loving and has semi-mischievous tendencies. The way the cat interacted with his human was adorable, too. The illustrations made this story even more fun and had me laughing out loud at the pictures that matched Gar’s thoughts and actions. I recommend Gar the Great and the Forbidden Top Shelf Shiny by M K Bingman to young children who love a fun-filled, adventurous story, and I hope that this talented author writes many more stories like this one that will entertain children for years to come.
