Russell’s Gavin: The First Installment of Gavin Nolan's Biography follows Detective Gavin Nolan, a distinguished member of Chicago law enforcement. Gavin is smart, witty, and charming. Together with his partner, they worked on a series of disturbing and bizarre murder cases. The story has interesting characters that either made Gavin’s life easier or made it a living hell. Russell gives us a glimpse of the lives of law enforcers from their time as a rookie and the road they must travel to rise up the ranks. The mature contents were tastefully written. You’ll find yourself immersed in horrific crime scenes, the spine-tingling chase between our hero Gavin and the cunning murderer, and heart-warming scenes. Not for the faint of heart.

Russell’s Gavin is an exciting read and kept me guessing until the end. The plot twists caught me by surprise and were revealed when I least expected them. This novel made me laugh out loud with the characters’ witty sarcasm. I got teary-eyed by the tender moments Gavin shared with his loved ones and was terrified by the antagonist’s horrific twisted games. I was also delighted to find a mix of characters from all races playing important roles to catch the bad guy, from smart, resourceful female characters to the genius Asian guy, formidable black ex-military, and Hispanic officers. Russell’s description of Gavin makes me want to make a hobby of running too. I was reminded why I love watching crime dramas as the story was entertaining and informative at the same time. I can’t wait for the second installment!
