Robert Liebertz’s Gerard’s Map follows Gerard Sharp, captain of the merchant ship Tawny Mane, after he deciphers ten multilingual clues beside an invisible map linked to the Haywood, a vessel lost twenty-six years earlier while carrying a fortune. Gerard leaves England with his wife Samantha as two allied ships join the voyage. He believes the clues point toward an island in the Azores archipelago, yet wages must come from trade before anyone can search for buried coins. The fleet follows its established route across the Atlantic, buying goods in each harbor before selling them farther along. As the ships travel through the South Pacific, an enemy captain sends hired men to Gerard’s family in the northern English town of Falstone. The treasure remains distant, while every choice at sea reaches lives far beyond the Tawny Mane.
Robert Liebertz has written a fantastic historical adventure, and I loved how every member of the cast has a genuine role in the story. Liebertz has a massive amount of nautical knowledge, and the result is an authentic-feeling journey where the crews know their stations and can solve problems through long-established skills. Liebertz does a beautiful job of turning an expedition into a venture where discovery belongs to the company. A perfect example comes on Corvo, where navigator Vaheana compares a hand-drawn survey of the volcanic caldera with a star chart until four sinkholes form the Crux constellation. The answer follows days of searching by sailors from all three vessels, in the hopes of reward for their collective effort. The dialogue has moments of wit that flow naturally from longstanding friendships, and even the ancillary characters are fleshed out. Well written and immersive, readers interested in historical adventure will love this book as much as I did.
