Get Through This Book by Brett Rumfelt is an interactive picture book that follows a bright green character who desperately tries to make it through the pages of a story. Convinced the book looks boring, the character decides the quickest solution is simply to get through it as fast as possible. What follows is a series of increasingly silly attempts to escape the pages. The character tries to walk through the book, run at full speed, turn all the pages at once, dive through what appears to be a hole, squeeze into the middle of the book, swing from a rope, climb a ladder, and navigate bizarre twists that suddenly transform the entire page design. Throughout the story, a smaller purple companion reacts with confusion, encouragement, and occasional frustration as every plan falls apart in unexpected ways.
Get Through This Book is written in a lively, fast-paced style that perfectly matches the story’s energy. The dialogue is simple and direct, allowing the visual humor and page-turn surprises to carry much of the comedy. Rumfelt uses repetition, timing, exaggerated expressions, and metafictional humor to create a highly interactive read. The pacing is especially effective because every page introduces a new obstacle or visual gag. The illustrations are bright, expressive, and easy to follow, with the green and purple characters communicating emotion through body language as much as dialogue. The book also makes clever use of its page design, turning the book’s physical structure into part of the joke. Readers who enjoy humorous read-aloud stories, interactive picture books, and self-aware storytelling will find plenty to enjoy in Brett Rumfelt’s creative work. It’s an excellent resource for elementary teachers to inspire young students to read.
