Did you know that your blood works very hard to keep you healthy? It flows through your body, carrying much-needed oxygen and nutrients, as well as disposing of waste that your body doesn’t need. In Fei Zheng-Ward’s Getting Ready for My Blood Test, a young boy shares his understanding of how our blood takes care of us, why we sometimes need a blood test, and how to prepare for it. It’s an amazing journey through the process and reasoning behind blood tests, from the preparation, which sometimes includes fasting, to the actual process of collecting the blood, and concluding with what one feels after the test is completed and how the lab processes the blood that is collected. The story shares coping strategies to help young ones undergo the process. It doesn’t have to be a scary or painful event, that is, if one looks at it as a fascinating learning experience.
Fei Zheng-Ward’s picture book, Getting Ready for My Blood Test: A Blood Test Book for Kids – Preparation and Recovery, is a great resource to help young readers prepare for and undergo the sometimes frightening experience of having blood drawn. The language is simple to help young readers easily follow along and improve their reading skills, while at the same time learning some fascinating details about blood, how it works in the body, and why it’s sometimes necessary to have some extracted for testing. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful, and include details. For example, the page illustrating what blood carries through the body shows images that young people can relate to, like favorite foods, while the opposite page shows food residue that the blood carries for disposal. A child can easily relate to these images. This is a great educational and interactive tool for young readers and will certainly help those young people who have to undergo multiple tests for better health.
