Ghost Child: Uncovering Family Secrets from a Back Porch to the Yucatan by Deborah Jennings is a unique, touching, and gripping memoir. Raised in a modest yet comfortable small apartment in a wealthy area by hardworking parents, Deborah often wondered about her parents' lives, how they met, or why she was an only child. Since childhood, even though her parents made her feel wanted and loved, Deborah sensed that she might belong to another family. However, one day, a biology class on genetics compelled her to seek answers, yet she lacked the courage to ask her parents directly. Thus, years passed, and then she learned about her actual place of birth, and the curiosity about her origins bothered her even more. Could she have been adopted? After more than twenty years of anguish, she finally found the courage to uncover the whole truth, thereby discovering her origins and heritage and gaining a deeper understanding of herself.
Ghost Child: Uncovering Family Secrets from a Back Porch to the Yucatan is a compelling true story of loss, adoption, discovery, identity, heartbreak, and fulfilment about the author's life and her intense, emotional, and much-needed journey of searching for her biological family. Deborah Jennings's writing is heartfelt, unfiltered, honest, and filled with a mix of pain regarding her biological mother and gratitude regarding her discovery of the true meaning of family. This extraordinary memoir about a brave woman who grew up in very modest circumstances and discovered that she's from a very prominent family makes it clear that your biological family doesn't determine who you are, it doesn't define you, and most importantly, it's not your destiny. I highly recommend it.
