Ghost Hauler: Fifty Teeth by Stephen Van Olsen is part serial killer crime story and part psychological thriller. Stephen drives the American interstate as a freight hauler, and he has done so for 27 years. But he doesn’t just drive—he kills, too. And he takes a souvenir, a trophy to remember them by, from each victim: a tooth. As his crimes cross state lines, the FBI is on the hunt, and soon Agent Mara Holt starts to see a pattern and begins to connect the dots. As Stephen travels the roads, the ghosts that follow him get louder as each mile passes, but one mistake could signal the end. Will Mara catch up with him before anyone else has to die?
Ghost Hauler: Fifty Teeth is the second book in the series. It is a work of fiction, but reads like a true-crime story and takes you straight into the mind of a serial killer. Each chapter is its own story, each one about a different victim, a different part of the highway, and the single tooth he takes as his trophy. This is a unique story, written in a way to hook you right from the start. It’s one of those “just one more chapter” books that you’ll not want to put down until it’s done. Despite being a serial killer story, it’s not full of graphic violence; instead, it’s a clean-cut narrative that enables the reader to imagine more than they read. It’s written in the first person and feels like you’re a passenger along for the ride, listening to a story where the ghosts that haunt Olsen shape the narrative and lead the action. It’s not packed with unnecessary detail, but it does promise one thing—to completely unsettle you and send chills down your spine. The ending is a surprise, and it feels as though there’s more to this—maybe a sequel is on the way? Stephen Van Olsen's book will appeal to fans of true crime stories, along with anyone who loves a good spine-chilling thriller.
