Ghostly: Perks of Being Paranormal Book 1 by Kate Serzenta is a paranormal romantic comedy about Gabriel Vane, a workaholic lawyer suspended from his law firm because of a huge scandal. His affair with his beautiful and recently separated client, Wynona Sinclair, has been made public. Gabriel leaves the city to hide in the small town of Buttons where he rents an old Victorian house. He discovers that the house is haunted by Ida, a lonely and chatty ghost who has been dead since 1888 and stuck in the house. Ida is excited when she realizes that Gabriel is the first and only person to be able to see her. They join forces to help her complete a contract to pass to the afterlife, but their friendship blossoms into something deeper. Gabriel understands that there is more to life than work as he becomes part of the colorful community.

Author Kate Serzenta pens a well-written romance full of light humor and creativity. The storyline is highly engaging with a steady pace that keeps readers interested in the love dynamic. The chemistry between Ida and Gabriel is sweet and believable, not rushed like in many romantic stories. The character development of the hero, Gabriel, and the heroine, Ida, is robust and layered. I enjoyed their shared obsessive-compulsive disorder and unique personalities. Readers will fall in love with Ida’s quirky nature and laugh at her penchant for haunting objects like books, television, and computers. Ghostly is an endearing and fun love story that will keep readers entertained.

Ghostly is the first book in the Perks of Being Paranormal Series by Kate Serzenta. At what would have been the height of Gabriel Vane's success, he is knocked down by a scandal. Banished by his company for six months, he chooses to lie low in a Victorian home in a small town. The house is supposed to be empty, but Ida Huxley, who died young and has an obsessive-compulsive disorder, startles him and begs Gabriel to stay when she realizes he can see her. Gabriel attempts to help her move on by acting out a supernatural contract on her behalf, but one condition of the contract is hard for him. Soon, Ida not only haunts objects, like books, but she also haunts his thoughts. He wonders if he really wants her to move on and if she doesn't, what kind of relationship they could hope to build.

Kate Serzenta's characters are charming and multilayered. The conditions of the contract are well-plotted, with unforeseen events triggering their fulfillment. Ida is witty and smart, and I found myself wishing more than once that she'd been born later, as it seemed she was ahead of her time in many ways. A bit of mystery surrounds the characters, teasing the reader into focusing on every detail as they learn how and why Ida passed away and follow Gabriel's search for her grave. The connection between Gabriel and Ida was so strong that I was surprised their attraction alone didn't bring her back to life. It was interesting to read about her last relationship, Perry, and his and Gabriel's attempt to make Ida part of the land of the living again. Readers who enjoy paranormal romance novels with character growth and a hint of comedy will love Ghostly.

Ghostly: Perks of Being Paranormal Book 1 by Kate Serzenta is for fans of chick lit and romance with a paranormal twist. Gabriel Vane is an ambitious lawyer who works hard to become a partner in a solid law firm. Gabriel must win one more case to get promoted. Instead, Gabriel is suspended for six months because of scandalous photos of him and his client, Wynona Sinclair. Gabriel decides to drop out of sight for a while. He moves to a Victorian house in a small town where nobody knows about the famous Gabriel Vane. This house is haunted by the ghost of Ida Huxley, and Gabriel is the only human being who can see her. Ida is happy to get a tenant she can communicate with, while Gabriel doesn't have time for a lonely soul who has been stuck there since 1888. An old book offers a contract with tricky conditions that Gabriel must fulfill to set Ida free. But is Gabriel ready to let Ida go?

Kate Serzenta's Ghostly is a delightful read, proving that true love is worth fighting for. Ida is bright, funny, and lovable. At first, her quirkiness seems amusing, but there is more behind it. Gabriel is a workaholic with carefully guarded secrets. The two main characters are very different, yet they have something in common. Serzenta invites us to study them and draw our conclusions. The author offers a unique concept of haunting. Ida "haunts" objects to explore them. During a hilarious interaction with Gabriel, Ida hints that she may have haunted toilet paper. At the same time, this humorous romance novel touches on some serious topics. Mental disorder is one of them. The book reminds us to be more accepting of people struggling with such conditions daily. Serzenta explores different kinds of traps we may find ourselves in. Among them are anger, vanity, and an inability to forgive. Serzenta shows the way out of these traps in her thought-provoking novel.

Author Kate Serzenta brings readers a splash of comedy mixed with paranormal romance in Ghostly. Ida Huxley is excited that someone new is moving into her Victorian house again, even if it is for only a few months. It’s been so long since she had any human interaction although they probably wouldn’t be able to see her. After all, being a ghost does have its limitations. Enter Gabriel Vane, a lawyer. When a scandal hits the news regarding his current girlfriend, he finds himself suspended from the firm and has to disappear for a bit. Buttons seems to be the perfect place. Only, the house he is renting seems to be occupied already. All Gabriel wants is to get lost in his work to pass the time, but that is not to be. To get a little peace, Gabriel agrees to help Ida move on.

Author Kate Serzenta has brought a beautiful novel of love and friendship to life. From the very first page, the pace is set with characters filled with personality. They are relatable and described with passion and flair. Sensory stimulation is abundant and will keep readers engaged throughout. It's written in the third-person narrative from the perspective of the two main protagonists which gives the reader insight into their thoughts, feelings, and desires. Due to some expletives as well as an intensely passionate love scene, this book is not recommended for younger readers. With Ghostly as the first book of the Perks of Being Paranormal series, the author has ticked all the right boxes to make this novel phenomenally amazing!
