Ghostly: Perks of Being Paranormal Book 1 by Kate Serzenta is a paranormal romantic comedy about Gabriel Vane, a workaholic lawyer suspended from his law firm because of a huge scandal. His affair with his beautiful and recently separated client, Wynona Sinclair, has been made public. Gabriel leaves the city to hide in the small town of Buttons where he rents an old Victorian house. He discovers that the house is haunted by Ida, a lonely and chatty ghost who has been dead since 1888 and stuck in the house. Ida is excited when she realizes that Gabriel is the first and only person to be able to see her. They join forces to help her complete a contract to pass to the afterlife, but their friendship blossoms into something deeper. Gabriel understands that there is more to life than work as he becomes part of the colorful community.
Author Kate Serzenta pens a well-written romance full of light humor and creativity. The storyline is highly engaging with a steady pace that keeps readers interested in the love dynamic. The chemistry between Ida and Gabriel is sweet and believable, not rushed like in many romantic stories. The character development of the hero, Gabriel, and the heroine, Ida, is robust and layered. I enjoyed their shared obsessive-compulsive disorder and unique personalities. Readers will fall in love with Ida’s quirky nature and laugh at her penchant for haunting objects like books, television, and computers. Ghostly is an endearing and fun love story that will keep readers entertained.
