Giver of Gifts: Nature’s Story of Hope by Everly Cade gives a nod to the Onondaga Nation that used to live on the shores of Lake Ontario—where Everly lives now. Showing respect for both the ancestors and nature, Everly explains how nature gives hope for the future by keeping the amazing cycle of life going. It is time that we all, adults as well as children, learn it is our responsibility to protect the earth which so bountifully provides our needs. One way this can be done is by taking from nature only what we need and will use while leaving the rest behind to replenish itself. Everly encourages children to become a gift-giver, just like nature is, by sharing what we have and realizing we are all connected to each other. At the end of the book, there is a pledge with space to sign saying you will become a Giver of Gifts. This cute picture book will hopefully inspire your child to take care of the only earth we have.
Everly Cade has written a wonderful little picture book in Giver of Gifts to encourage children to take the time to notice nature and all it should mean to them. The rhyming nature of Everly’s writing will bring joy to your child. Sabrina Riegler is the illustrator and does an excellent job of showing the interrelation between all of nature. She shows the circle of life while drawing in a way that will entertain children. Giver of Gifts is an excellent book for children to understand how important it is to be protectors of nature and thankful for all Mother Nature gives us. Often people fail to realize how everything on earth is interconnected and this book will open many eyes. Encourage your child to slow down and notice all that nature does for us and how important it is to live in harmony with the earth.
