Gizmo Goes to Yellowstone by Heidi Heisel follows Gizmo, a small, tailless dog, heading out on a journey to Yellowstone in search of a tail to fit in with other animals. Along the way, he encounters various creatures, including antelope, deer, buffalo, a raven, and a wolf, each with different types of tails that do not suit him. Even though Gizmo is feeling discouraged, he continues his search and eventually tries a white bunny tail near Old Faithful. The bunny tail proves entertaining for others to giggle at his choice, but he realizes it is not the right fit. Just as he begins to lose hope, a wise grizzly bear advises him to embrace his uniqueness rather than conform. The bear teaches Gizmo that individuality is valuable, and, as Gizmo mulls over this lesson, he smiles, realizing he does not need a tail to belong.

Heidi Heisel’s Gizmo Goes to Yellowstone is an endearing adventure with an important message about self-acceptance. The writing is simple and fun, with rhyming verses that make Gizmo’s journey a delight to read aloud. The real magic, though, is in the photography—adorable images of Gizmo exploring Yellowstone, meeting wildlife and searching for the perfect tail bring the story to life. These shots, set against the park’s breathtaking landscapes, are absolute charmers. The hand-drawn illustrations add a whimsical touch. This book is a heartwarming tale of identity and belonging, wrapped in a delightful pictorial package. Gizmo’s adventure is both entertaining and meaningful, reminding readers that fitting in isn’t nearly as special as embracing who you truly are. Recommended.
