Glowy's Great Escape is the first book in The Sparkling Adventures of Glowy the Fish children's book series by A. K. Smith. Glowy the Fish lives with her family and friends inside a magical coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. One day Glowy follows Dipper the Dolphin toward the bright light above, but loses her glow and is caught in a fishing net without means of any escape. A man on the fishing boat sees Glowy and throws her back into the ocean, which is sadly filled with so much trash. Lost and alone, Glowy wishes very much to be back home. When Oscar the Octopus appears out of curiosity, the fright Glowy receives brings back her glow. Although shocked, Oscar calls Denzel the Dolphin and Owen the Eel to help take Glowy home. Denzel knows Glowy's magical home well and, carried on Denzel's back, Glowy finds her way home.
A. K. Smith's delightful tale of Glowy and her friends brings back such wonderful memories of fishing days with my dad. The beautiful deep-sea fish glow because it is so incredibly dark in the deepest parts of the ocean. From having a world of fun while following a dolphin to sheer terror while on a fishing boat, it is very easy to understand why Glowy is so afraid and confused. Mention of the ocean's trash is sadly a reality of today and, hopefully, the children who read Glowy's Great Escape will learn from mistakes we have all made regarding responsibly disposing of a person's trash. I feel that children will fall in love with Glowy the Fish, her friends, and her incredible glow. I recommend Glowy's Great Escape to young readers over the age of four so that they might fall in love with the ocean just as I did when I was young.
