In "God Had Other Plans," Heather Nelson takes the reader through the heartbreaking experience of conceiving a child only to be tossed into a whirlwind of heartbreak and loss. Enduring endless medical procedures and countless infertility treatments, the author found herself pregnant and thought it nothing short of a miracle. And then, tragedy struck and joy turned to utter grief when a D and C was mandated. The procedure left the author feeling guilty and ashamed of her own inability to do what billions of women across time have accomplished - bear a child. Furthermore, the tension in the marriage was at times unbearable and the comments of friends and family, although well-meaning, often tended to exacerbate the pain of the loss.
Throughout the journey, the author struggled with her own feelings about herself and her faith. Gradually she learned to cope emotionally through her faith and this resulted in a different set of feelings and perceptions. The section on giving feedback to grieving would-be mothers is an important portion of the learning process. Gradually, the author learned that God has many purposes for us and some of those purposes involve tough and painful processes along the way. For women struggling to have children, this is an inspirational story and one which should result in the reader feeling some sense of support and common experience. Most readers will conclude that despite moments of feeling alone and abandoned, God is with us, willing to share the burden and ignite learning along the way.
