In Death of Days by Eliot Pattison, Cato Pike leaves his dangerous world in intelligence because he no longer trusts the leaders. His life is interrupted when his estranged father, a renowned historian, summons him with a favor. Cato travels to an abbey in Scotland’s storm-tossed Orkney Islands to retrieve a mysterious package. His journey is surrounded by danger; assassins and ruthless intelligence agencies are hunting Cato. He races to stay ahead of them, and his investigation takes him into a secret archive of the German intelligence service. Cato and his allies need to locate and secure the Pleiades Key. As the pieces fall into place, Cato discovers that the mystery reaches back to the treacherous legacy of the Cold War and an even older crime.
Death of Days by Eliot Pattison combines ancient mysteries with modern espionage. Cato and his troubled relationship with his father add emotion to the plot. His partnership with the Scottish detective adds dark humor to the seriousness of the events. The surroundings were described in detail and felt like characters on their own. As the story progressed, I became more and more invested. The historical discoveries added more mystery to the plot. The book was well researched and written. I read everything at my own pace and paid special attention to the details because I did not want to miss anything. This book was much more than I expected, and I found myself pondering over it from time to time after finishing.
