In Good Boy Timmy by Eric Walters, Timmy is a dog who is always praised as being a “good boy.” He doesn’t misbehave, stays at home while his family is out, and follows all the rules. But one day, Timmy starts to wonder what it would be like to break free from his good-natured reputation. Inspired by the wild antics of his ancestors, he imagines becoming “Bad Boy Timmy,” acting out like the other dogs at the park. He pictures himself chewing up sweaters, sneaking into cupboards, and embracing a more rebellious spirit. Throughout this journey of self-exploration, Timmy discovers that although he can choose otherwise, his love for his family outweighs the thrill of being naughty, and he resolves to stay true to his role as the family’s “good boy.”
Good Boy Timmy is a delightful read that offers a simple yet profound exploration of self-discovery. The pacing is just right for a picture book, keeping young readers captivated while Timmy’s thoughts unfold in a relatable way. Eric Walters beautifully wove together the themes of identity, choice, and family, making them easy for children to grasp while still encouraging deeper reflection. Timmy’s internal struggle and his eventual decision to be “good” out of genuine desire rather than obligation sends a powerful message. Timmy feels relatable, and his reflections on his wild ancestry add a touch of imagination to the narrative. Eugenie Fernandes’ playful illustrations enhance the quirky, rhythmic storytelling beautifully. Good Boy Timmy is a sweet and enjoyable read that encourages thoughtful consideration of personal growth and the invaluable love and support of family.
