Someone once said, “A grandmother is a little bit parent, a little bit teacher, and a little bit best friend.” And that is definitely true in Grandma’s Backyard Adventure by Tabatha D. Hale. This children’s picture book begins with two young brothers, Ezra and Zane, getting ready for the day. An ordinary morning soon turns into something special when their grandmother shows up. She’s going to take them on an adventure full of fun and imagination. She and the boys set up camp and put on gear, including their special watches. Once ready, they head into the “jungle” with their dog, Stella. As they explore, the family encounters friendly creatures like deer and bees. Then a couple of special butterflies join them. Together, the group enjoys more of nature’s surprises. Spending time with loved ones can sometimes turn a normal, boring day into a magical one.
When I was a little girl, my dad would take my brother and me on adventures through the woods, where we would pretend to be characters from Robin Hood. Reading Grandma’s Backyard Adventure by Tabatha D. Hale brought back those wonderful memories for me. It captures that sense of childhood imagination. The writing is easy to understand, making it perfect for young learners, but there’s also a warm, comforting feel that adults will appreciate. As an educator, I’d use this as a read-aloud to talk about imagination, nature, and family. Teachers could also have students create their own “backyard adventure” stories or draw maps of imaginary worlds. The illustrations by Bobbi Sturgeon are very cheerful. The bright colors and expressive faces bring the tale to life. This book would definitely be a great addition to any home or classroom library. Young readers who enjoy imaginative outdoor adventures will be charmed by this fun-filled journey.
