Greetings!! My Name is Slim Jim!! written by Pamela Dawn and illustrated by Anna Hoffman is about a doll made for a young girl, Pamma, by her great aunt. Pamma and Slim Jim, the narrator, live on a farm. Slim Jim is a peculiar-looking doll that can change colors and talk to other creatures, such as butterflies and a dog. One day, Pamma and Slim Jim go for a walk and see some boys catching polliwogs. Pamma tells them to stop, without much success, but then Slim Jim talks to the boys’ dog, who barks and jumps in the creek, which encourages them to put back the polliwogs. The boys explain they were catching the polliwogs because lights and the sound of bells coming from the water made them think the polliwogs were in danger. They were trying to save them. But Slim Jim tells them the lights and sounds were coming from his friend, the Sparkle Princess, who only appears in clean water.
I enjoyed reading Greetings!! My Name is Slim Jim!! by Pamela Dawn. It’s fun to read and packed with excellent moral lessons for children, although never preachy. The many good lessons for children include an environmental message, the fun of making new friends, and respect for all life. I especially liked this line spoken by Slim Jim: “It doesn’t matter what color I am on the outside, I’m always the same on the inside.” That’s a clear illustration to children that every human being is the same, no matter the color of their skin. The illustrations by Anna Hoffman are beautiful and fit the text perfectly. Although Dawn doesn’t say what age she intends the book for, it’s age-appropriate for those in early elementary grades and younger children who need to have the book read to them. I recommend it to children everywhere, along with their parents and grandparents.
