Grumpy Gus Meets Santa Claus (Books for Kids Book 3) by Dale Lewis is set against the backdrop of the Christmas season. Gus adores Christmas, but this year he seems to have become grumpier. He could not sleep properly on Christmas Eve. He hears a faint noise from above and he feels scared. He sees a flash of light and a man in red lands in the fireplace with a crash. It is Santa Claus and Gus can’t believe his luck. He is glad Santa did not get stuck. Santa wants to know why Gus is awake as it is way past his bedtime. Gus tells Santa how tired he is and that he just wants Christmas to be over soon. Santa tells him about what the season means and what the best gift is to receive and give to others.
The author captures the essence of Christmas and its spirit beautifully. The message in the book is excellent as it highlights the importance of receiving love from everyone and giving love to everyone. The illustrations are adorable and colorful and they breathe life into the author’s words. Gus's plight is palpable and can be understood by readers. It’s a good book to give for Christmas and can also be used for bedtime story-telling. The story is good for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries, especially during Christmas. Stories that spread the essence and spirit of Christmas and the season are good for children to read to tell them exactly what Christmas is all about and this book does just that.
