Happy Hank Straightens His Room is an informative children's book by Matt Page. Hank lives happily until he is around seven years old. He starts feeling like he needs to straighten his room. At first, it is okay, as his room is much neater. However, Hank notices this need to clean his room is overpowering and consumes his thoughts at home and school. Hank believes the result will improve every time he makes his bed or organizes his things. He shares his feelings with his mom, and she gives him an idea to help reduce this desire to have everything in perfect order. Hank tries to follow her advice but has difficulty, and it affects his mood, making him sad. Even though the situation is hard, he perseveres, hoping his accomplishments will help him feel happier and more fulfilled.
Matt Page addresses obsessive-compulsive disorder in this book while showing a safe strategy for helping children who may experience some of the same symptoms. Page lightly covers exposure and response prevention, giving a good example for caregivers to try with children. The story opens up several areas for discussion with readers who may experience the condition the author describes or for children who want to help their friends who exhibit Hank's tendencies. While the book isn't meant as a substitute for assistance from a medical professional, it helps children understand the behaviors associated with the condition. Readers who enjoy books that raise awareness about mental health conditions will benefit from reading Happy Hank Straightens His Room.
