In Hard Headed Woman by Howard Gimple, Hannah’s father established the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Hannah grieved over her father, feeling responsible for his death. Over the past six months, Hannah experienced muscle control loss and fainting spells. During one of these fainting episodes, Hannah collapsed onto her father, who subsequently passed away from a stroke shortly after. At the funeral, when Hannah had another episode, her cousin Phil questioned whether she had sought a medical evaluation for her condition. Phil was skeptical that Hannah’s father had suffered a stroke and arranged for tests that indicated he might have been poisoned. Upon returning to the wildlife refuge, Hannah found it enclosed by a tall fence and guarded by an individual armed with a machine gun. Hannah had to discover what was happening at the wildlife refuge and sought assistance from Phil and her close friend, Bette.
Hard Headed Woman by Howard Gimple took me on a thrilling journey filled with sorrow, intrigue, and danger. I was captivated from the very first page and could not stop reading. I was so afraid of missing something that I did not put the book down for even a moment. The fast-paced action kept me fully engaged throughout. With all the unexpected twists and turns, it was challenging to guess who might have been behind the death of Hannah’s father. The characters felt authentic and relatable. Hannah's mother, Olive, worked hard to support Hannah during her struggles. The writing was exquisite, with vivid descriptions of all the events. It was a gripping read, especially with all the changes happening in the wildlife refuge. I found the story thoroughly enjoyable and was engrossed until the final page. The conclusion was a major surprise, and I did not expect it at all.
