It is 1373. John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster, is leading a chevauchée through France. Owing fealty to the duke, Haukyn of Flintborne has no choice but to join the campaign. After months of hunger, fatigue, combat, and bloodshed in the wake of the war, all Haukyn wishes for is to ease back into the calm village life he had been used to. However, on returning home, he is dismayed to find the village drowning under the weight of crushing taxes and feudal abuse. As these local injustices spark the revolt of 1381, Haukyn finds himself sucked into a rebellion that puts his loyalties to the test. But that’s not all. Haukyn is caught between two women. Will he choose Annabelle, the cheerful, peaceful mother of his child? Or will it be Ilotte, the wild spirit? Find out in Jill MacLean’s The Arrows of Fealty.

Jill MacLean’s The Arrows of Fealty is a must-read for lovers of historical event/era novels blended with drama, action, suspense, adventure, and more. Weaving an intriguing plot anchored in a gripping back story, MacLean breathes life into the scenes with vivid depictions. The medieval terms and choice of words sprinkled throughout gave the narrative historical authenticity. It felt like I was back in fourteenth-century Britain, experiencing its civilization and culture. Through the fascinating, dynamic characters, MacLean explores themes of war, corruption, power, loyalty, justice, resistance, freedom, oppression, family, and love, among others. The conversations, filled with colloquial jibes and warm camaraderie, gave insight into the characters' conflicts, emotions, and complex traits. I loved this book.
