When Charlotte Cooper, a twenty-nine-year-old print journalist in New York, is transferred to London after the acquisition of her magazine by a media magnate, she dreads only one thing—running into her ex-boyfriend Rafe, a sculptor. However, she soon learns that this may be the least of her worries. On her arrival in London, she rekindles her relationship with Rafe. Things begin to look even better as she is moved to broadcasting at the media house, and she seems to have a promising career on TV. But then, just as her career is on the cusp of success and her life is coming together, she receives an envelope that threatens everything. In the envelope are her nude photos and a clear message that she should leave London, or the pictures will be leaked to the public. Who wants her gone? What will Charlotte do? Find out in Herta Feely’s Strange Shape of Love.
With depth to the narration and an introspective voice, the author enabled me to experience the characters’ emotions and made it easy to connect with them. The purposeful conversations gave insight into their conflicts. The author slowly unfolds the plot, accompanying the storyline with a subtle tone. Reading the story felt like playing a puzzle game, and with each flip of the page, the image of the puzzle became clearer. Through the story, Herta exposes the predatory and backstabbing culture that is often the norm in media houses. There is blackmail, workplace gossip, human rights crisis, jealous ex-lovers, stalkers, and more. Lovers of slow-burning mystery novels with a touch of romantic intrigue will find Herta Feely’s Strange Shape of Love an enthralling read.
