In Healing Woman of the Red Rocks by Verna Clay, Dr. Thomas Matthews has recently lost his wife to an illness that he could not cure. Amy is his young daughter and she is beginning to show the same symptoms that her mother had. When Thomas hears two men talking in a local saloon about a strange woman who lives alone amongst the animals in Red Rock, and can cure people and animals with special potions, he believes he has found the answer for Amy. They pack the mule with supplies, and head off on horseback for a long and dangerous journey through Indian country. Along the way, they meet and make friends with several different people, including Chief Geronimo, before arriving at their destination. After a long and hard trip, they finally find the way to the beautiful red rocks area. Tana Raven is the mystery lady they are looking for. Tana has been told by her dead grandmother in her dreams that a man will be coming who will make her cry. She is, therefore, not surprised when Tom and Amy appear at her doorstep. Tana can heal animals and people with her ancient cures, and she agrees to try to help Amy. The three become close friends, sharing both frightening and fun times.
Healing Woman of the Red Rocks (Red Rocks Trilogy) by Verna Clay has historical facts, folklore healing, vivid descriptions of the Arizona area known as Red Rocks, great characters, and a fast moving story. This book took me on an amazing excursion and introduced me to some very likeable and interesting people. It was impossible not to root for Amy and her father to find the happiness they deserved, and shake your head in amazement as Tana administered her skills to a wolf, an eagle, and all the other animals. Verna Clay has written a very accurate story, taking me back to 1882 and wishing I could have been there. I highly recommend this book and anxiously look forward to the next book in the series.
