The setting is Australia in 1984 and eighteen year old Emma Taylor is friends with Carla Price and she adores Carla's older brother Dean who would appear to be a "lost cause". Dean drinks, dresses totally in black and hangs out with local rock musicians, most especially his friend Jacob "Cobra" Edwards who fronts the group, Stingray. Dean's parents think he is flunking out of college but he's actually graduating with high honors. Emma and Dean truly do love each other and they get together for wild, abandoned sex one night on a beach. Emma becomes pregnant as a result.
Emma's highly protective grandmother and guardian dies and Dean is badly injured in a motorcycle accident. Years pass and Emma is the single mother of seven year old Adam, the child she conceived in her steamy night with Dean. Dean has a high paying position with Dave and Evelyn Price who rescued him from his motorcycle accident years before. Emma is pursued by longtime admirer Ghassan Kheir and Evelyn Price lusts after Dean. Can Emma and Dean surmount all the twists and turns in their lives to come together as a married couple, offering a home life to young Adam?
"Heartbreak Highway" is a novel that will entrance and hold the attention of romance readers everywhere. The title refers to a song that Dean writes for Stingray that is based upon his star-crossed love for Emma. The book is well-written and the characters are totally believable, engaging in authentic action and dialogue throughout the story. The story needs a bit of spell check, but otherwise offers the twists and turns that a good romantic novel must offer its readers. The sidebars such as Jacob's gay preference are well-incorporated into the story. A good buy for romance lovers everywhere.
