Heartrender is book three in the Heartmender series by V. Romas Burton and a delightful fantasy that continues Addie’s journey to free her people from the deadly grip of a powerful enemy. In book two, Addie discovers that she is the Bellata, the one that has been spoken about in the prophecies, the one destined to defeat the powerful Ophidian and unite the Twelve Magisters. In this final installment in the trilogy, we meet her after a devastating encounter, with those closest to her gone: Silas, Eman, and Claire. She has suffered a significant loss, but she refuses to give up. Returning to Ramni has left her shaken to the core with the loss of lives. Roman and Lyle stand by her and undergo the Twelve Lands of Decim, where she is appalled at the discovery that the Ophidian has upped the game. Instead of harvesting hearts, the evil is harvesting souls, becoming stronger by the day. In the showdown to this trilogy, will young Addie defeat the enemy and unite the Twelve Magisters?

This conclusion to the Heartmender trilogy is explosive, and V. Romas Burton creates a protagonist with an impeccable character arc. I enjoyed following Addie's growth through the story in unexpected ways. The author’s conflict handling is excellent, especially how it grows in proportion to Addie's maturity. To make the protagonist a likable and strong character, the author creates an invincible enemy that grows stronger every day. This means that with every moment wasted, Addie knows her chances are slimmer. The narrative is packed with action: it is fast-paced and peppered with emotionally engaging moments and strong imagery. Heartrender is a powerful page-turner featuring unforgettable characters and an immersive setting that will fascinate readers. The novel is layered with conflict and danger that lurks in every corner of every moment: entertaining, deftly plotted, and expertly executed.
