In The Secret of Hunter Mountain by Julie Anne Stratton, Gerlinde, recovering from assault, faces a prophecy in her family’s herbal book about a silver box and a quest tied to her Faith-Keeper role. She enlists her cousin Sarah, and they travel to Hunter Mountain, where they attend workshops and participate in rituals invoking protective spirits. In a sweat lodge, Sarah has a vision warning of dark forces, while Gerlinde performs a cave ritual during a storm, calling on elemental guardians. Guided by Indigenous mentors Quanah and Lena, Gerlinde hikes up Mount Rainier and discovers a hidden cave where sacred relics tied to the prophecy are kept. Meanwhile, Mark, a militant Christian and Fellowship agent, doggedly shadows her, ready to pounce on both her and anything she finds, leading to a catastrophic climax that could destroy everything.
It's hard to find books that intelligently feed my obsession with witchy vibes, ancestral magik, and sacred rituals, but The Secret of Hunter Mountain by Julie Anne Stratton did it all. The backstories are given in private thoughts and visions, and all are tied to prophecies and aided by spiritual mentorship. The hikes up Hunter Mountain, the deciphering of ancient maps, and the discovery of hidden caves and sacred objects had my heart all aflutter, and I cannot stop thinking about Stratton's smooth integration of European Pagan practices with Indigenous wisdom, the protective spells, elemental guardians, and Goddess invocations. Gerlinde is an assault survivor, and it is quite graphically described, but Stratton ensures that its importance to the story on both counts is unambiguous. The Secret of Hunter Mountain is part of a series, but it read perfectly well for me as a standalone, and merits an easy five stars.
