Hearts Eclipsed is L. C. Son’s companion novel to Beautiful Nightmare (Book One), providing an account from the perspectives of Dalcour and Jackson as they each strive to win the heart of their true love Damina Nicaud. This is an eternal love triangle, flared into myriad complexity by the diverse range of supernatural elements woven into these relationships. It is a world where vampires and wolves co-exist in a tenuous peace within human society, in spite of the actions of discontented factions pursuing their own agendas. The ultimate threat to this accord forms when Damina is exposed to Dalcour, and she becomes torn between him, being a lord of the vampires and Jackson, the prime alpha of the wolves. Only Damina’s choice has the capacity to resolve this perilous entanglement, and the very survival of all may hinge on its outcome.
I found L. C. Son’s Hearts Eclipsed hard to put down. It is more than simply a love story. It is a whole world of wonder, containing supernatural beings brought vividly to life in all their passion, vulnerability, and sheer emotional power, in pursuit of the ultimate goal of finding love. The characters were realistic and easy to form bonds with; so much so that I found my allegiances shifted more than a few times as the story progressed. This is a creation that has been crafted with no half measures, and as such it does contain violence suitable for more mature audiences, but that is also what stamps this as a rich and rewarding read.
