Hennie and Her Poetry Eggs by Kym Gordon Moore is about a young hen who feels out of place on a farm, where she is constantly compared to others and judged for being different. Unlike the other hens, Hennie lays colorful eggs that do not hatch into chicks but instead reveal small scrolls of poetry, something she does not understand and initially rejects. The other hens mock her, calling attention to her appearance and her unusual eggs, which deepens her feelings of isolation and confusion. Through her interactions with kind figures like Betty the pig and Farmer Elijah, Hennie begins to hear a different message about self-worth, kindness, and purpose. Her parents also guide her, explaining that her gift is rare and meaningful and that her poetry can encourage and connect with others in ways that ordinary eggs cannot.

Kym Gordon Moore writes in a clear, straightforward style that leans into dialogue and moral reflection, giving the story a steady rhythm. Conversations between the characters carry much of the story’s meaning, allowing lessons about kindness, identity, and confidence to unfold naturally rather than through heavy narration. The pacing is measured, giving room for Hennie’s feelings to develop while also introducing guiding voices that help shape her understanding. Readers who enjoy stories with clear messages and strong emotional arcs will appreciate how Hennie and Her Poetry Eggs presents its ideas through simple, memorable scenes. The use of a farm setting and talking animals provides a familiar backdrop, making the story appealing to younger audiences while still offering thoughtful insights for older readers who value stories about identity and personal growth.
