When one beautifully husky laugh takes hold of his heart and squeezes, Damon is forever lost to the beauty and the pain that is Megan. Unfortunately, Megan does not do long-term and she does not do commitments. She is a “here and now” type of girl, much to the chagrin of Damon and his fantasies of happily ever after. Here & Now follows Megan and Damon as they both try to get what they want out of a relationship that is clearly so much more than either of them realizes. BJ Mitchel does a solid job of creating characters full of depth and emotion without being melodramatic. Megan is closed off to any relationship that could be more than sex and casual encounters, while Damon is finally experiencing something he once thought elusive. But when a surprise pregnancy is thrown into the mix, Megan and Damon are willing to fight to the death…but who will win?
BJ Mitchel really paints a clear portrait of Megan and her desperation to hang on to this casual life she insists on living. She calls Damon ‘lover’ to minimize their relationship and bluntly cuts off any attempt of his to inject emotion into their sexual liaisons. She’s good at keeping Damon at arm’s length, but Damon is as good at slowly breaking down her barriers. In Here & Now we see that his determination to have her heart is worth the heartache, pain and rejection. It took me a while to warm up to Megan, but once her story became clear I rooted like a Super Fan for Damon to get through to her and help her open up and stop being so afraid to love again. The story pulls you in, grabs your heart, and squeezes every emotion possible before giving you what you really want.
