Hidden Wings by May Tomlin is about LaRae, a college student who aspires to do art, against the advice of her family. They want her to quit college and come home to work in a “meaningful” job. They also pressure LaRae to accept her childhood friend, the tobacco-chewing Norman, who wants to marry LaRae and raise pigs. LaRae meets and falls in love with an international student, Lars, from Norway. LaRae is devastated when Lars returns to Norway, not knowing that Norman had warned Lars away from LaRae. Coincidentally, LaRae's grandmother came from Norway. When her grandmother's sister who stayed in Norway dies and leaves LaRae and her sister, Amanda, the home in Norway, LaRae travels to Norway. Her plan is not only to take possession of the family home but to try to find Lars among the 105 Lars Pettersens in Norway.
My favorite part of Hidden Wings by May Tomlin was learning about Norway, the landscape, the customs, the food, the Viking ships, the lighthouse, and the fjords. I love that God led LaRae to a kindred spirit in Cora, who realized the talent that LaRae needed to let herself express. I love that despite LaRae's mother's lack of understanding, God sent a group of women to commune with her on a level that neither her mother nor her sister had done. I enjoyed learning about painting. I liked that while Lars could admit that he had human desires, his desire to save himself for his future bride was stronger. I appreciated that Cora and LaRae prayed to God with their hands raised to the heavens.
